REVIEW TEXT 3RD EDITION DPM REVIEWS

The latest ACFAOM [now ACPM] Review Text 3rd Edition is a great addition to the bookshelf of anyone in the field of podiatric medicine. The information is laid out in an outline format for each chapter, making it easy to find a particular topic quickly. Some of my favorite chapters include the sports medicine one, where pathologies are broken down by sport (ie, running, cycling, wrestling, ball sports, etc) and rheumatology, where conditions are broken down with all the pertinent information for either making or attempting to make a diagnosis (ie, clinical presentation, laboratory and radiographic findings, dermatological – skin/nail findings, and treatment options). In this layout, the book is a great resource for the podiatric student or the practicing clinician when a quick review of a topic is needed, whether right before an exam or in between patients. Further, having just taken my ABFAS Board Certification Exam for Computer Based Patient Simulation, I can say this textbook is a welcomed study resource.

I have just finished reviewing the 23 chapters of this excellent book. The contributing Editors provide a comprehensive highly outlined podiatry text that is now one of podiatry’s best educational assets for DPMs, residents, and anyone preparing for board certification. Bibliographical citations are extremely thorough and help support the material being presented. The questions provided are all answered in the chapters that are well written and thought provoking. Classifications of deformity and trauma are clearly identified.

The text impressed me as representing the state-of-the-art in Podiatric medicine as it exists today, and will assist in the development of the standard of care in foot and ankle surgery and orthopedics. It is so comprehensive that other disciplines of medicine treating foot and ankle pathology will also benefit from this text. Radiologic images including X-rays and MRIs are clear and easily demonstrate appropriate pathology. Stick diagrams are also indicative of intended discussions regarding normal and abnormal positions.

As a podiatric residency director in a PMSR/RRA program I utilize the ACFAOM Review text as an integral part of my resident didactic education.

The review text provides an outstanding resource in core knowledge in podiatric medicine, medicine and biomechanics. The text chapters are concise and directed at both basic and advanced knowledge in 24 categories of podiatric medicine.

The review text is a perfect complement to our didactic programming and enhances the podiatric resident in preparation for the American Board of Podiatric Medicine qualification and certification examinations. My residents’ success in passing the ABPM Qualification and certification examination has been enhanced with utilization of the review text.

The third edition of the review text has a fresh updated design with increased content in scientific knowledge. Enhancements in the subject areas of imaging/radiology, biomechanics, foot orthoses & pedorthics, surgical criteria and complications, general medicine, infectious disease and wound care.

The newly released 3rd Edition of this book serves two functions: as an updated reference text for those sitting for certification examinations, and as a quick reference in the office.

For that reason, I will separate the review into two sections. I will first look at this book in the eyes of a candidate sitting for a certification examination. With twenty-three comprehensive chapters, and nearly 500 pages of information, this book reviews and covers most, if not all topics that are included in the ABPM and the ABFAS board exams. At the end of each chapter, the authors provide an average of 20-30 questions that review the most important content in the chapter. There is a total of 565 questions for the entire book. The questions are about a 15%/85% mixture of case-based questions and traditional multiple-choice questions. As a comparable reference, Boards by the Numbers (certifiable.com) provides 825 multiple-choice questions with seventeen foot Computer Based Patient Simulation (CBPS) cases, and BoardVitals (boardvitals.com) has 700 multiple-choice questions and no CBPS cases.
